As a Relationship Manager, Karen advises multi-generational families. She is primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring long-term comprehensive financial plans, focused on asset allocation, portfolio management, and tax planning, that meet clients’ short-term needs and long-term objectives. Karen interacts with clients on a daily basis and collaborates with members of Pitcairn’s Tax, Investments, Planning, Insurance, Trust Administration and Operations teams to design and implement appropriate investment strategies and financial and estate plans. In particular, she focuses on succession planning, generational wealth transfer planning, strategic and tactical asset allocation, and tax optimization strategies to achieve the goal of wealth preservation for clients. Karen also works closely with families on matters of philanthropy through private family foundations, donor-advised funds, and various other giving techniques. Karen is a member of Pitcairn’s Education, Planning and Learning & Development committees. Prior to assuming her current responsibilities, Karen served as a Personal Financial Analyst performing accounting and financial analysis for clients in areas of comprehensive financial planning. She began her career at Pitcairn as a Client Account Administrator, providing daily support to multi-generational client families and serving as their point person. Karen earned a BA from the University of Scranton and holds the designation of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. Having previously worked for a non-profit doing special events and fundraising, Karen still has a passion for both hands-on volunteering, as well as hosting dinner parties with friends and family. Karen grew up spending her summers in Breezy Point, a beach community in Queens, NY and her twin daughters are currently fourth generation Breezy Point beachgoers. Karen and her family are also music enthusiasts; she and her husband enjoy going to concerts and taking their daughters to music class.

7 Guidelines for Multigenerational Success Moderated by Karen Carlson, Pitcairn 

Most families adopt and evolve a dedicated governance structure over the years and generations, with key triggers prompting an increased focus on how families come together and make shared decisions. Families

often take steps to formalize governance structures around significant transitions – for example, the sale of a business or other liquidity event or shifts in family leadership as new generations enter the fold. These inflection points serve as a chance to institute a better way to make decisions going forward. In this breakout session, we will focus on 7 established best practices for families to consider as they evolve and formalize their family governance practices, as well as conversation starters family members can use to explore their governance needs and priorities.
